Quick Recap of the Week
The stock market had a modest gain last week after some very volatile trading. The week began with continuing concerns about China. Most stock indices opened on Monday with losses between 5% to 10%.
After six straight days of losses, stocks had large gains on Wednesday and Thursday. Small-cap stocks continued to rally on Friday, but it was a non-eventful day for most other sectors.
As for economic data, the gross domestic product was revised upwards. Also on the positive side, the odds of a near-term interest rate hike decreased. It’s unlikely the Fed will raise rates if stocks continue to fall or fluctuate wildly.
On the negative side, China’s stock market now has a loss for the year. It was up over 65% just two months ago. In addition, consumer sentiment, personal spending and home price data were worse-than-expected.
The C Fund led the TSP with a 0.95% gain. The S Fund moved up 0.79%, while the I Fund advanced by 0.35%. The F Fund fell 0.59%.
